Description

Civil War U.S. Pistol Cartridge Box – “J. Davy & Co. Newark, N.J.” – Inventory Number: LEA 457 / SOLD Civil War-era U.S. pistol cartridge box, designed to carry revolver ammunition for sidearms commonly issued to Union troops such as the Colt Army or Navy models. Constructed of black bridle leather, the box features a scalloped front flap and a clear maker’s oval stamp: “J. DAVY & CO / NEWARK N.J.”, a known military leather contractor during the war. The box retains its original belt loops on the reverse, intended to secure it to a standard infantry or cavalry waist belt. The inner flap, tool pouch, and wool lining are not visible in these images but may be present or removed. These compact boxes typically held six paper cartridges for .36 or .44 caliber pistols and were widely issued to cavalrymen, artillery crews, and some officers. The condition shows moderate field wear, with stitching intact and the leather still pliable. A fine example of Civil War leather gear, this cartridge box would be an excellent addition to any U.S. military or cavalry collection.   Inventory Number: LEA 457 / SOLD
