Description
Complete Packet of Forty-Two Smith and Wesson’s Patent Metallic Primed Cartridges for the Model 1865 Spencer Carbine – Manufactured by C.D. Leet, Springfield, Mass.
An exceptional and intact Civil War–period ammunition packet containing 42 primed metallic cartridges intended for the Model 1865 Spencer Carbine, caliber .50. The vivid yellow printed label is boldly titled “SMITH & WESSON’S Patent Metallic PRIMED CARTRIDGES”, referencing the influential April 17, 1860 patent governing primed rimfire cartridge production during the war years.
The packet bears the prominent imprint of C.D. LEET of Springfield, Massachusetts, one of the most important subcontractors supplying primed cartridge cases to the Federal government and to private arms manufacturers during the conflict. Leet’s marked packets—especially complete, unopened examples—have long been prized for their scarcity and association with the iconic Spencer repeating carbine.
The outer wrapper exhibits only minor age toning. Label edges are strong and untrimmed, and the typography is clear, unfaded, and highly legible. The packet was opened but retains the original contents and an outstanding display presence and represents one of the finest forms of Civil War ammunition packaging: a perfect complement to a Spencer carbine, cavalry accoutrement display, or ammunition collection.
Spencer-related cartridge packets are increasingly difficult to obtain. This example is museum-grade and ideal for high-end Civil War collections, especially those interpreting Federal cavalry arms and ammunition logistics during 1864–1865.
