Description

Confederate States of America $1,000 Bond

February 20, 1863

An outstanding and display-ready example of a Confederate $1,000 loan bond, issued under the Act of Congress C.S.A., February 20, 1863, and printed by the renowned Evans & Cogswell of Columbia, S.C. This issue bears an ornate design with detailed engravings, including allegorical figures and a striking vignette of the Confederate Treasury building. Portrait at top left: R.M.T. Hunter, Confederate Secretary of State Denomination: $1,000, Interest Rate: 8% annually, paid in $40 semiannual installments. Serial Number: 7368. Excellent condition; bold ink, excellent preservation, and no major tears. 8 intact $40 coupons along the bottom, all clearly marked and signed. These bonds were an attempt by the Confederate government to raise critical war funds while appealing to patriotism. Today, they serve as vivid artifacts of Southern finance, Confederate ambition, and 19th-century printing art. A striking centerpiece for any Civil War, Confederate, or fiscal history collection.

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
