Description
Dug U.S. Belt Buckle with Attached Leather Remnants – Spotsylvania Area
A powerful dug U.S. infantry waist belt buckle recovered in the Spotsylvania region, retaining rare surviving leather belt fragments still attached behind the plate. The buckle displays the classic raised “US” oval face and retains its arrowhead-style brass hooks on the reverse. Long-buried leather remains are present around and beneath the hooks, hardened and mineralized from extended ground exposure.
Recovered from low, wet ground, the buckle shows the characteristic preservation pattern found in low oxygen environments. Buckles recovered with integral leather are often associated with long-buried or undisturbed wartime deposits, and in some cases can be consistent with possible soldier interment locations—though no direct provenance of a grave site accompanies this example. Still, the presence of leather fused to the back makes this a dramatically compelling relic.
The plate itself has a rich, untouched dug patina, with soil staining and protective mineral layering. Reverse hooks are intact and fused in place with the remaining belt leather, forming a striking “straight from the ground” display.
A haunting and highly desirable battlefield buckle—made exceptional by the preserved leather still riding beneath the reverse hooks.
Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
