Dug U.S. Oval Plate with Soldier-Carved Initials “JDB” Recovered at Pooleville
Excavated Federal U.S. oval box plate, recovered near Pooleville, an area well known for its Civil War troop activity and winter encampments. The plate exhibits a rich, untouched battlefield patina on the face, with strong “US” lettering and classic earthen coloration from long-term ground exposure.
The reverse features a deeply carved set of initials: “JDB” cut by the soldier who wore it. Personalization of this kind is far scarcer than standard issues and offers a direct, intimate connection to the individual volunteer. The lead back shows clear, confident strokes, suggesting the initials were added during field use. Both box loops are present.
Artifacts recovered from the Pooleville area are associated with Union cavalry and infantry units operating in Loudoun County, Virginia, particularly during the 1861–1863 period of heavy movement and skirmishing along the Potomac River. Plates with identified initials from known activity zones like Pooleville present compelling research opportunities.
Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
