Description

E. Whitney U.S. Model 1841 “Mississippi” Rifle 1851 Dated

An attractive, untouched example of the U.S. Model 1841 percussion rifle, popularly known as the “Mississippi Rifle.” This .54 caliber specimen was manufactured by Eli Whitney of New Haven, Connecticut and is lock plate dated 1851.

The rifle retains a uniform dark attic patina throughout, never cleaned or polished, with crisp edges and excellent originality. The brass buttplate is deeply stamped with “US” along the tang, and the number “448” is present, suggesting rack or inventory numbering during its period of service.

The walnut stock remains solid with light handling wear, and though softened by age, a pair of inspector’s cartouches are still faintly visible on the flat opposite the lock plate. The oval patch box and other brass mountings have mellowed to a pleasing, untouched tone, complementing the rifle’s overall attic condition.

Whitney was one of the largest contractors for the Model 1841, producing more than 26,000 rifles between 1843 and 1855. The Mississippi rifle was carried in both the Mexican War and the Civil War, valued for its accuracy and ruggedness. Untouched examples such as this, with clear government markings and original patina, are increasingly scarce and highly sought by collectors.
