Exceptional Sky-Blue Kersey-Covered Smooth-Side Union Canteen
Civil War Period, c. 1861–1865
A superb and increasingly unobtainable example of a Union smooth-side tin canteen, covered in original sky-blue kersey wool, widely regarded as the most desirable covering encountered on Civil War canteens. The body retains its correct smooth convex form, entirely wrapped in finely woven kersey rather than the more commonly encountered jean cloth or coarse wool.
The canteen is complete with its original cotton web sling, exhibiting period wear, honest staining, and undisturbed knots from wartime use. The tin spout retains its original stopper, the body shows light oxidation, and field wear without repairs or restoration.
Sky-blue kersey coverings were produced in far smaller quantities and are associated with higher-grade early-war or contractor-made canteens. Surviving examples with original straps intact are now exceedingly scarce, particularly in this untouched condition.
An outstanding representative example of a quintessential Union soldier accoutrement.
