Full-Standing Union Soldier CDV
Handsome carte-de-visite portrait of a Union soldier, photographed full length in an elegant studio setting. He stands in a relaxed pose beside a draped table and Victorian side chair, one hand resting atop a book, the other tucked into his frock coat—an iconic period stance. His regulation frock coat displays a nine-button front, and he wears sky-blue trousers with a pronounced officer’s seam. His impressive full beard and confident bearing make this an especially striking wartime likeness.
The reverse bears the imprint: “104 Main Street, Milford. E. Lewis Wires.”
E. Lewis Wires operated a photographic studio in Milford, Pennsylvania during the 1860s, producing a limited body of work compared to larger urban studios. Surviving military portraits from his gallery are scarce, and this example—with its excellent clarity, composition, and untouched surface—is a particularly appealing specimen.
A choice addition for collectors of Union officer photography and regional Pennsylvania Civil War images.
