Description

Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Belt Plate and Keeper

A fine G.A.R. belt plate complete with its original keeper, featuring the raised intertwined “G.A.R.” letters at center surrounded by emblematic fraternal devices — crossed sabers, cannon, anchor, and musket — representing the branches of Union service. Constructed of cast brass with a stippled field and raised border, this plate retains an attractive, even patina and crisp detail throughout. The reverse exhibits the proper tongue-and-bar attachment system, with the matching keeper marked with the same intertwined monogram.

These plates were worn by veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic, the preeminent Union veterans’ organization founded in 1866. G.A.R. members proudly displayed such insignia during reunions, parades, and memorial observances as symbols of service and fraternity among former soldiers and sailors of the Union Army and Navy.

An excellent and complete example of a veteran’s belt plate — a striking emblem of postwar pride and remembrance.

Comes housed in a display case with red velvet backing and descriptive card.
