Home on a Furlough

Rare Civil War Patriotic Engraving by John Sartain, 1864

A highly desirable original Civil War-era engraving titled “Home on a Furlough,” engraved by the celebrated Philadelphia artist John Sartain and published by Bradley & Co., Philadelphia in 1864. The image depicts a returning Union soldier welcomed home by his family, one of the most powerful and emotionally resonant themes of the war years. Gathered around the veteran are his mother, wife, children, and neighbors, while the soldier’s military accoutrements and the family’s humble rural setting reinforce the sacrifices borne by both soldiers and those awaiting their return.

The inscription below the image reads: “To the loyal mothers, wives and daughters of our country, this engraving is respectfully dedicated.” Published during the final year of the Civil War, the print served as both patriotic artwork and a tribute to the countless Northern families whose lives had been shaped by the conflict. Sartain was among the most respected engravers in America, and his wartime works are prized for their exceptional detail, historical significance, and emotional appeal.

Original Civil War patriotic engravings of this quality and subject matter are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly in such attractive condition. A wonderful display piece that captures the human side of the Civil War and the home-front experience that defined the era.
