Hospital Steward Chevrons – Inventory Number: MED 173 / SOLD Rare Civil War Hos Pair of 10 3/4″ x 2 3/4″ Civil War-era green wool chevrons with gold metallic thread borders and caduceus. Cotton webbing backing. Excellent. The Hospital Steward was responsible for assisting the surgeon in minor surgical procedures, dispensing medicine, and supervising the attendants and other civilians who worked in the hospitals. They were charged with procuring vegetables, meat, and bread from the local area when the normal supply system was interrupted. Some stewards worked in the government laboratory supervising the production of medicine. Comes housed in 12 inch x 16 inch riker display case with black velvet backing and descriptive card.
