Description
Imported Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber
A classic example of the famed Model 1840 “wrist breaker,” this imported heavy cavalry saber remains in excellent condition, retaining strong visual appeal and honest service character. The broad, deeply curved blade exhibits a smooth, bright surface with only light scattered age toning, free from active corrosion or significant blemishes. The edge remains crisp, and the fuller well defined along its length.
The substantial brass hilt, of regulation three-branch form, shows a rich, untouched patina with pleasing mellow tones. The leather grip is well preserved, retaining its original wrap with tight, intact twisted brass wire binding. The saber has a solid, tight feel throughout, with no looseness at the guard or pommel—always a desirable trait in these hard-used cavalry weapons.
Imported examples such as this were brought in large numbers prior to and during the early Civil War years to meet the urgent demand for cavalry arms, many seeing extensive field service with both Federal and, at times, Confederate forces. This example stands out for its condition and strong eye.
A fine representative of one of the most iconic edged weapons of the Civil War cavalryman.
