Lookout Mountain Bullet-in-Wood Relic Inkwell
Fashioned shortly after the Civil War from a bullet-scarred fragment of timber recovered from the battlefield of Lookout Mountain, this evocative relic transforms a tangible remnant of combat into a practical memorial. Mounted in the weathered wood are two period glass inkwells, while the center prominently displays the projectile that struck the timber during the fighting.
Most remarkable is the original typed identification label affixed to the underside, which reads, “Bullet scarred piece of wood found on battlefield at Look-Out Mountain.” The label further references Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman, whose forces participated in the Chattanooga Campaign that culminated in the celebrated Battle of Lookout Mountain on November 24, 1863.
The Battle of Lookout Mountain, immortalized as the “Battle Above the Clouds,” was one of the Union’s most important victories in the Western Theater. Relics directly associated with the battlefield have long been treasured by veterans and descendants alike, and this piece reflects a uniquely nineteenth-century tradition of transforming battlefield souvenirs into keepsakes intended to preserve the memory of the conflict.
