Description
Original Civil War U.S. Hand-Held Parade Flag with Staff
34-Star Pattern, c. 1861–1863
Exceptional and scarce original Civil War–era small printed cotton parade flag, retaining its original turned wooden stick, a feature seldom encountered.
The flag displays a 34-star canton, arranged in orderly horizontal rows, surrounding a central void typical of mid-war production. The 34th star represents Kansas, admitted to the Union on January 29, 1861. Although additional states would soon be added, the 34-star flag remained the official national flag throughout the Civil War, including the entire period of major hostilities.
Printed in red, white, and blue on lightweight cotton, the flag exhibits strong period pigments with expected age toning and light fraying at the fly, entirely consistent with genuine wartime manufacture and use. The hoist is wrapped and affixed directly to the staff, indicating factory or period assembly rather than later mounting.
The original wooden staff, tapering to a pointed finial, survives intact and undisturbed—an uncommon and important element, as most surviving examples are found separated from their sticks or later framed without them.
Comes housed in 12 x 16 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
