Rare Civil War Period Maryland State Seal Cartridge Box Plate

This rare, die-stamped Maryland State Seal cartridge box plate is a classic Civil War-period example, constructed with a brass face and a lead-filled back, fitted with its original iron wire attachment loops for secure mounting to the cartridge box. An example of this pattern is illustrated on page 151 of Steve Mullinax’s Confederate Buckles and Plates, where its distinctive form and state-specific iconography are noted.

The present specimen stands apart for its exceptional state of preservation and surface quality. Unlike examples that retain traces of gilt wash, this plate exhibits a rich, mellow bronze patina that has developed naturally over time, lending it a highly desirable, untouched appearance. The details of the Maryland state seal remain crisp and well-defined, with strong definition throughout the device and border.

Importantly, both original iron loops remain fully intact—an increasingly scarce feature, as these are often lost or compromised. The lead fill remains solid and undisturbed, further underscoring the integrity of the piece.

Likely manufactured by a prominent maker such as Ames or Gaylord, this plate represents a superb and increasingly difficult-to-find example of a very rare Civil War accoutrement, combining excellent condition, complete construction, and outstanding eye appeal.
