Description
Rare New Jersey “Groz” Alteration Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle
Whitney Contract, N.J. Marked, with Tool and Spare Cone. Exceptional and scarce example of the U.S. Model 1841 percussion rifle manufactured under contract by Eli Whitney. This rifle features the rare “Groz” alteration, a modification ordered by the State of New Jersey in the late 1850s and attributed to Newark gunsmith Charles Groz. The alteration involved re boring an rifling the bore, turning down the muzzle and fitting a lug to accept a triangular bayonet, bringing older.54 caliber Mississippi rifles in line with contemporary service standards. The barrel is crisply surcharged “N.J.” denoting state ownership. Remarkably, the brass patch box retains its original period takedown tool and spare cone (nipple), a feature rarely encountered intact. Condition is excellent, with sharp markings, smooth metal surfaces, and a very well-preserved walnut stock showing only minimal handling wear. A highly desirable and seldom-seen variation of the Mississippi rifle, combining state issue, Whitney contract manufacture, rare alteration pattern, and complete accoutrements in the patch box. The bayonet which is almost impossible to obtain features a front sight mortised into the socket. It bears a matching patina and fits excellently.
