Description

Recovered Alexandria, Virginia Stoneware Crock

A wonderful example of mid-19th century utilitarian stoneware, this recovered crock was reportedly excavated in Alexandria, Virginia, an area rich with Civil War history and occupation-era activity. Crafted in classic salt-glazed brown stoneware, the piece features a pleasing cylindrical body with a flared mouth and attractive hand-turned finish throughout.

The crock displays excellent surface character with honest age and use wear, giving it the warm patina collectors seek in authentic recovered pottery. Its simple yet functional form reflects the everyday household and camp-related wares commonly used during the Civil War period.

Recovered artifacts from Alexandria are especially desirable due to the city’s significant wartime role as a major Union supply and hospital center just outside Washington, D.C. Pieces such as this offer a tangible connection to the lives of soldiers and civilians during one of America’s most defining eras.

Measures approximately 7 1/4 inches high with a 2 1/4 inch mouth opening.

A fine display piece for the Civil War collector, recovered relic enthusiast, or early American stoneware collection.
