Sailor’s Personal Effects Box of Charles R. Loring

This painted wooden chest belonged to Charles R. Loring, who enlisted in the U.S.
Navy on September 8, 1864. Loring served aboard the USS Sabine, USS Mahaska, and USS luka, and saw duty on the East Gulf Blockade during the final year of the Civil War.
The inside lid includes a period handwritten note that reads:
“This box was carried through the Navy by C. R. Loring on board the U.S.S.
Mahaska and U.S.S. luka. The Mahaska was painted on cover by C.R.L. while on the East Gulf Blockade, done roughly with a pointed stick having Ino brushl.”
Stamped inside the box is Loring’s name and enlistment date. A hand-carved brush and small Navy insignia are among the personal items it once held. Loring was discharged on June 14, 1865, and later died in Yarmouth, Maine in 1913 at age 69.
This chest offers a rare, intimate look into the personal life of a Union sailor during the final year of the Civil War, including his ingenuity and pride in service.
