Description

U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Saber – C. Hammond, Philadelphia

A fine example of the U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Saber, manufactured by C. Hammond of Philadelphia — one of the lesser-seen private makers who supplied sabers during the early years of the Civil War. The heavy curved blade measures approximately 35 inches and remains in excellent condition, showing a smooth, even gray patina. The steel scabbard, complete with both suspension rings, displays matching untouched age toning and light field wear.

The hilt retains its original leather grip covering and twisted brass wire wrap, with the classic three-branch iron guard exhibiting a rich, aged patina. The ricasso is marked “C. HAMMOND”, a known mark from this maker, whose sabers are prized for their early-war production and robust quality.

Patterned after the French Model 1822, the Model 1840 was carried extensively by Federal cavalry in the early and mid-war years before the lighter Model 1860 came into general issue. Nicknamed the “Wristbreaker” for its weight and power, it remains one of the most iconic blades of the Civil War cavalryman.

An excellent example of an early-war U.S. cavalry saber from one of Philadelphia’s historic makers.
