Description
U.S. Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber N.J. Marked
U.S. Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, the iconic curved saber issued to mounted troops. This example retains its full-length, deeply curved single-edged blade, exhibiting honest service wear and age toning consistent with period use.
The blade is fitted with the correct brass three-branch guard, leather-wrapped grip, and twisted wire, all showing an attractive, untouched patina. At the ricasso, the saber is clearly stamped “N.J.”, indicating state issue to New Jersey troops and the reverse “HORSTMANN / PHILA” of Horstmann and Sons of Philadelphia a desirable and collectible marking that ties the weapon directly to state service during the Civil War era.
The saber is accompanied by its original steel scabbard with suspension rings, showing matching age, wear, and surface oxidation consistent with long field service. The overall presentation is strong and unaltered, retaining the unmistakable look and feel of a regulation Civil War cavalry saber.
Often referred to by soldiers as the “Old Wristbreaker” due to its weight and balance, the Model 1840 was the principal saber carried by Union cavalrymen in the early and mid-war years. State-marked examples, particularly those attributed to New Jersey, are increasingly difficult to obtain and are highly sought after.
