Exceptional quarter plate ambrotype of a pre-Civil War militia marching band. The image likely dates from the mid to late 1850s. The six men in the foreground appear to be wearing pattern 1851 style forage caps with the stiffeners removed and civilian frock coats. Five men hold a variety of horns, with the man on the far right posing with a bass drum. An American Flag on staff is draped at the center of the image. Good clarity and contrast with some slight flaking to the black paint on the back of the plate. The image is framed in a copper mat and housed in a full thermoplastic case. A great outdoor scene with stellar content.
