1833 U.S. Ames Artillery Short Sword with Scabbard – Inventory Number: SWO 298
An iconic and highly desirable early American military blade. Model 1833 U.S. Artillery Short Sword, manufactured by the legendary N.P. Ames of Springfield, Massachusetts, and dated 1833, the very first year of production for this pattern.
The heavy Roman gladius-style blade is marked with the early Ames eagle stamp, above the “N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD” maker’s mark. The reverse ricasso is deeply dated 1833, and the brass crossguard bears inspector initials “JM”, consistent with government acceptance of the period.
This early-production sword features the original brass-mounted black leather scabbard, which remains solid and complete—a rarity in this condition.
Excellent condition. Blade shows honest patina and light pitting near ricasso, consistent with age. Brass hilt and guard show beautiful mellow tone. Scabbard is solid with minor wear.
A prime example of the earliest U.S.-made military short swords, carried by artillerymen and engineers before and during the Mexican War and into the early Civil War era. Early-dated examples in this condition are increasingly scarce.
