1850 Staff & Field Officer Sword - Inventory Number: SWO 314

Outstanding example of a Civil War Model 1850 Field and Staff Officer’s Sword manufactured by Emerson & Silver of Trenton, New Jersey. This regulation pattern officer’s sword is in excellent condition, exhibiting high-quality craftsmanship and well-preserved original features throughout.

The blade remains bright with sharp edges and displays elegant, deeply etched patriotic motifs including a “U.S.”, spread-winged American eagle with shield, and scrollwork, all crisp and clear. The ricasso is marked “Emerson & Silver / Trenton, N.J.” on one side, with inspector’s or assembler’s marks faintly present on the reverse.

The hilt features a regulation cast brass guard with floral and “U.S.” cutout designs, retaining a pleasing aged patina. The sharkskin grip is in exceptional condition, tightly wrapped with twisted brass wire intact and undisturbed. The original brass pommel cap is also finely detailed and secure.

Housed in its original brass-mounted steel scabbard, which retains a smooth, clean surface with minor age-related toning, this sword presents as a near arsenal-grade specimen. The brass throat, middle mount, and drag are firmly affixed, showing only light handling wear.

This is a superior and complete example of an Emerson & Silver staff officer’s sword, ideal for advanced collections of Civil War edged weapons or high-quality military displays.
