50th Anniversary Gettysburg Reunion Medal with Provenance - Inventory Number: CON 618

Gift to Confederate Veteran A.E. Nelson, 60th Georgia Infantry Bronze commemorative medal issued at the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1913, accompanied by its original period handwritten tag. The inscription reads: “Presented to A.E. Nelson by Jacob Snyder on July 5, 1913. Made from cannon captured from the Rebels at Gettysburg, purchased from the platform of Genl. Meade’s Headquarters while at the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.” The medal is suspended from its original patriotic red, white, and blue ribbon and mounted in a display with detailed service history for A.E. Nelson, who served in Company F, 60th Georgia Infantry, C.S.A. Nelson enlisted September 19, 1861, and later deserted in April 1864 at Chattanooga, TN. Also noted is the donor, Jacob Snyder, a veteran of the 1st Alabama Cavalry (Union), indicating a poignant postwar gesture of reconciliation between former foes during the great Blue and Gray Reunion. Medal and tag are attractively framed with printed documentation on the Battle of Gettysburg and the participants’ service. A tangible artifact of Civil War memory and veteran camaraderie, directly tied to the historic 1913 reunion — one of the largest veteran gatherings in American history. Condition: Medal with light age patina, ribbon shows minor fading, tag with expected toning and corner loss. Overall, very good and well-preserved in display.

Comes housed in riker display case with velvet and descriptive card.
