The 1861 cartridge: the new U.S. Ordnance Manual in November 1861 simplified the cartridge construction for wartime mass production and reduced the bullet to .574 diameter. This cartridge is versatile and was designed to work in both .577 Enfield and .58 Springfield rifled muskets.
