Patriotic themed circa 1861 Sheffield manufactured Bowie knife marked “ALEXANDER SHEFFIELD.” Alexander was a New York importer of Sheffield Bowie Knifes during the Civil War. The knife measures 11” in total with a 6 ½” blade in very good condition with a sharp edge and marked “NY” with a shield motif. The grips are bone with German silver pommel and guard decorated with eagles, olive branches, shields, swords, the scales of justice, and liberty caps. The knife is housed in its original embossed “NY” marked scabbard, which is missing the German silver tip. This style is depicted on pages 8 and 11 in Bowie Knives by Robert Abels, a copy of which is included with the knife. A scarce and highly attractive Civil War Sheffield.
