Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1856 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was a 1st Lieutenant in the 2nd United States Regular Artillery at the beginning of the war. He was transferred to the Commissary of Subsistance Department, and rose tot he rank of Lieutenant Colonel. By the end of the war he was serving as Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the Union Army of the Ohio. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He remained in the Regular Army after the war and retired witht he rank of Colonel in 1896.
