Cartridge Box Plate and Eagle Breast Plate from the Battle of the Wilderness - Inventory Number: REL 105 / SOLD
Civil War eagle breast plate which adorned the soldier’s cartridge box sling, along with a “US” cartridge box plate that was mounted to the box’s closure flap. This pair was recovered together many years ago on the Wilderness Battlefield and were likely from the same cartridge box. The breast plate is missing 90 percent of its lead fill from the fire but has a slick, uncleaned patina on the face. The box plate has a somewhat rougher, plum patina on the face and most of its lead fill. The hard-fought Battle of the Wilderness on May 5-6, 1864 was the first showdown between Lee and Grant and resulted in nearly 29,000 casualties in the tangled thickets west of Fredericksburg.
