CDV Robert Hutchins 7th N.Y.S.M. - Inventory Number: CDV 573
Wounded by Shell at Wilderness, VA,
Entered service as Private 7th New York State Militia, early 1861. Served also with the 7th in mid-1862. Appointed AAG, US Vols, late 1862 • Assigned to Wilcox 1st Division, 9th Army Corps, and later with Burnside. Wounded, left groin, by a fragment of a shell, at the Wilderness, 6 May 1864. An operation in March, 1865 did not correct and heal Hutchin's wound. Treatment continued.
Born in Concord, New Hampshire, living in Brandon, Vermont, Robert Hutchins married Georgina A. Jackson, " but was always called Georgie" on the 13th of September 1867 [17th, by another account]. Two children were born to them, Robert H. in 1869 and Elizabeth A in 1872 . Georgina died in September of 1877. Robert died 15, October 1883 in Los Angeles, California. Nathan P. Kingsley of Rutland, Vermont became the children's guardian.
The attending physician who was acquainted with Robert Hutchins for about three months stated "he professionally attended him for six weeks immediately before his death, that he died Oct. 15. 1883 from disease of the Kidney which was originally caused by sympathetic inflammation following a gunshot wound that the disease from which he died was a consequence of the injury caused by Gun Shot wound received in Battle May 1864 "
Robert's Hutchin's pension was admitted 18 November 1884 and approved 4 December 1884, to commence 16 October 1883 the day after death of soldier.
