    Civil War Ames Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber, Scarce Date of 1856 - Inventory Number: SWO 184 / Sold

    Good condition overall, this Ames Type 1 saber was made in1856 and features a counterguard with a recess, and its matching metal scabbard without throat collar which would recess in the channel.

    Blade is 32 1/2 inches long, curved Curved, single edged with a flat top, and a single wide fuller and no narrow fuller.  It is in good condition with only light mottling and no edge nicks.  The surface is bright. 

    Obverse ricasso of the blade is stamped “U.S.  / W.D” in block format while the reverse ricasso bears the maker’s mark of “AMES MFg Co / CHICOPEE / MASS / 1856” in the earlier straight line format. Original leather washer is strong and intact.

    Pommel has a domed cap with knucklebow.  Entire brass hilt, including the pommel is bright. Original grips lacking twisted wire, the leather remains in sound condition with some wear from use. 

    The undented metal scabbard exhibits a bright surface overall with some light discoloration, but even in overall appearance.  Very nice example with scarce date.  On a handsome specimen of the Federal Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber.
