Civil War Era Hand Lantern, Police Lantern, Signal Lantern - Inventory Number: MIS 236 / SOLD

Civil war era hand lantern, police lantern, signal lantern, these were used in the mid to late 19th century. Also known as bullseye lantern. This model of lanterns was often used by the police, it is a predecessor of the flashlight. They are available with a candle and an oil reservoir, this one had an oil reservoir now lacking. It is a very small model, so may have been used as a flashlight. The lantern has a brownish glow, this is called Japanese tin plating. Measures 6 ½ x 2 ½.
