Civil War Era Minor Surgery Set in Original Case - Inventory Number: MED 280
An original Civil War period minor surgical set housed in a finely crafted mahogany case with brass reinforcements and escutcheon plate engraved with the name of the owner, “J.W. Beaumont.” No research as of listing.
The set retains its original key and opens to reveal a red velvet-lined interior with two tiers of surgical instruments. The upper tray includes a selection of small steel tools such as scissors and sutures, while the lower compartment holds several scalpels, some with bone handles with the initials J.W.B. Delicately engraved in old English lettering on the left-hand side of the handles.
These compact kits were typically carried by field surgeons or medical stewards for use in treating wounds, draining abscesses, and performing minor procedures near the battlefield. This set likely dates to the early 1860s and is a representative example of the personalized medical gear used during the American Civil War. An evocative artifact of 19th-century military medicine.
