Civil War Fire Trumpet - Inventory Number: MUS 168 / SOLD

Firefighters used trumpets as megaphones to amplify their voices when shouting instructions during a fire. Clear directions were vital to ensure safety and to keep firefighters working efficiently as a team. Officers would use “speaking trumpets” or “bugles” to amplify their voices over the noise and commotion of a fire scene to direct the company to effectively fight the blaze. Over time, trumpets took on a symbolic meaning for fire departments, and special presentation trumpets were awarded to honor firefighters' service or achievements.

Unlike the fancier counterparts of engraved silver, this is the utilitarian example for field use.  While most bear a fanciness related to the pomp and circumstance of parade or dress use, this example was used at the scenes of fire and rescue.  The body shows honest wear from use and handling, coupled with an untouched bronze patina from age and proper storage.  A wonderful example from the Civil War era fire department.
