Civil War Pistol Cartridge Box - Inventory Number: LEA 303 / SOLD

Soldiers armed with pistols required separate cartridge boxes. These show up in three sizes, which vary not by the caliber of the ammunition but the configuration of the packs that contained it. Not intended to have magazine tins, the boxes have additional leather sections fixed inside that kept the cartridge packs in place by friction. This box is in excellent condition with pliable leather and a slick finish with no crazing. The closure tab is complete and pliable, and both attachment loops are in very good condition. The front of the box is embossed with the maker’s mark “W. KINSEY & CO. NEWARK N.J.” The box is the large size and measures 6 7/8” by 5 ¼” across the front flap. A wonderful example that would be difficult to upgrade.
