Confederate 3lb. Mullane Shell – Inventory Number: CON 553

Very good, fired, excavated or very possibly an early pick-up, with a smooth, un-pitted body and a very strong visible mold seam. This Tennessee Sabot pattern projectile is also known as the Mullane shell. Its wood fuse adapter is not present. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War" the iron pins protruding from the base of the shell into the corresponding holes of the copper plate sabot were to prevent the sabot from simply spinning around the center bolt upon firing. The lack of the pins are likely the result of the shell impact and the sheared off center bolt is typical of a fired Mullane shell.

This shell has no repairs, has been deactivated, and is ready for display.
