    Confederate Bullet Mold from Museum Collection Solider was Captured at Gettysburg! - Inventory Number: CON 490 / SOLD

    .31 Caliber Brass Bullet mold with an old, typed tag stating: “Bullet mold made of brass used by John canton of Virginia in 1863. It’s general appearance indicates much service. Mr. Canten was in the Rebel Army, his Grandson Eugene Patterson of Baltimore, Md., presented the mold to the museum.” While the original museum is not known, this was also displayed at he Texas Civil War Museum and recently de-accessed. 

    Research indicated that the soldier’s name was actually John M. Canter (not Canton) - Enlisted on 1/15/1862 as a Private. On 1/15/1862 he mustered into "G" Co. VA 7th Cavalry. Captured after deserting at Hard Scrabble, VA.

    He was listed as:

    * Paroled (date and place not stated) (On the Steamer Coatzacoalcos)

    * POW 5/21/1862 Martinsburg, WV

    * On rolls 12/15/1862 (place not stated) (Estimated day)

    * POW 7/4/1863 Gettysburg, PA

    * Confined 7/29/1863 Fort McHenry, MD

    * Confined 7/31/1863 Fort Delaware, DE

    * Confined 9/26/1863 Point Lookout, MD

    * Confined 3/15/1864 Fort Monroe, VA

    * Paroled 3/24/1864 (place not stated) (Allowed to go to Charles County, MD)

    He was described at enlistment as: 5' 6.0", dark complexion, black eyes, black hair. After the War he lived in Charles County, MD.
