Confederate Cap Box - Inventory Number: CON 620
A rare Confederate-made percussion cap box, distinguished by its crude and non-standard construction. The box exhibits tack marks on the flap that were never adorned with brass embellishments as in U.S. regulation examples. The primary flap has been hand-cut down to allow easier access to percussion caps, while the secondary inner flap is asymmetrical, reflecting the improvisational workmanship of Southern manufacture. The entire box is hand-stitched using coarse thread, with none of the refinement of Federal production. The rear belt loops, also hand-stitched, remain present and stretched from extensive wartime field use. A sand-cast finial remains intact at the base. Leather shows heavy age, crazing, and wear consistent with its service. Confederate accoutrements of this type are generally scarce.
