    Confederate Identified Hymnbook Corporal Robert Irvine White - Inventory Number: CON 505

    (July 4, 1818-Sept. 30, 1890), of the 2nd Rockbridge Artillery ("McDowell Guard"), containing Corp. White's printed bookplate: "ROBT. I. WHITE, LEXINGTON, ROCK. CO. VA.". The hymnbook entitled: "VILLAGE HYMNS for Social Worship. Selected and Original. - Designed as a Supplement to the Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts." by Asahel Nettleton; Published and Sold by E. Sands, New York,1840. Corporal White’s name is on the label, written in pencil on the fly page as well as gold embossed on the outside cover with rubbed wear and rounded corners from being carried.  

    The 2nd Rockbridge Artillery was called such on account of being the second Artillery Company as to date of organization in the County. This Company was organized first as an infantry company, owing to the want of artillery equipment at the time and served as Company "B" of the 52nd VA Regt., then under Baldwin, and was a part of General E. Johnson's brigade, doing service in the Allegheny and Shenandoah mountains until the fall of 1861, when it was made an artillery company and was attached to the same brigade until the Confederate Artillery was made a separate organization. After this it was a part of McIntosh's battalion in General A.P. Hill's corps until the close of the war. Corporal Robert I. White was wounded at "Allegheny Mtn." on Dec. 12th, 1861, and listed as "recovered". He is buried at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, VA.
