    Confederate letter written by Frank F. Shortridge (1844-1864) Co. B 2nd Alabama Cavalry killed at Battle of Atlanta in 1864. Letter dated Nov. 5, 1861.

    Requests letter of recommendation for Confederate cadetship.

    "I desire you to write John P. Morgan, and recommend me a person worthy of, and as a nominee for the Confederate cadetship. Pa thinks the legislature & senate will have a powerful influence in making some of the appointments. I suppose you have seen something concerning the cadets in the newspapers. I am very anxious to become a cadet."

    The 2nd Alabama Cavalry was organized at Montgomery in 1862 and was present at the Battle of Atlanta and during the defense of Savannah and the Carolinas near the end of the war.
