Edmund Ruffin Autograph Letter Signed "Ed: Ruffin." - Inventory Number: CON 554 /SOLD

Edmund Ruffin Autograph Letter Signed "Ed: Ruffin." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Shellbanks; October 10, 1834. Addressed to an unknown recipient, Ruffin apologizes for billing a client after payment had already been made. It reads in part: "I owe you an apology for having sent to you a bill for your subscription for vol. 9, after it had been paid. I have no defense for it, except that some mistakes are unavoidable - & that I have adopted such regulations in printing receipts, & requesting corrections of errors & omissions, as will prevent any loss to subscribers by any such mistake or omission..."

A true believer in the Southern cause, Ruffin (1794-1865) is credited with firing the first shot of the war at Fort Sumter and committed suicide shortly after the end of the war rather than live with the "vile Yankee race".
