Enfield Rifle Musket - Inventory Number: RIF 086 / SOLD

    Dated 1862

The Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket is one of the best known and highly regarded of all British military arms.  Just over 950,000 Enfield muskets were purchased / imported by the US/CS Ordnance Departments during the Civil War.  In complete, good condition, this Enfield, single-shot, muzzle loading rifle musket measures a total length of 55" and features a 39" long barrel mated to a black walnut stock.  All gun metal exhibits an even smooth dark patina.  Bore is rifled with three strong grooves.  Would clean up to a semi-bright.  Lcokplate retains strong markings of the Victoria monogram of a "crown" as well as the date "1862" and "Tower" are visible forward of the hammer.  Mechanics are strong.  The export proof marks and gauge marks (25) for .577 caliber on the left side of the barrel breech are legible.  Barrel secured to stock with its original three, screw clamp bands.  The musket sling swivels are present on the top and trigger guard.

Buttplate, stock cap, trigger guard and the distinct side screw washers are all polished brass.  The ramrod is present.  Has the original long-range rear sight and the front blade sight.  Black walnut stock is in strong condition with a wonderful grain pattern, old repair at the wrist, very well done.  Overall a very fine displayable example of the classic armament of both north and south.
