General Regulations for The Military Forces of New York - Inventory Number: HIS 195 / SOLD

Albany 1858. Inscribed inside "James Huston/199 East 26th/New York" & "March 1861". Covers are worn from use, but the book is in good condition.

James Huston was born in Ireland in 1819, was an advocate for Irish independence. When the British government placed a 500-pound bounty on his head he left for America in 1848. He would enlist in New York City on April 18, 1861, as a Captain in the 82nd New York Infantry. He led the 82nd at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville as a Lt. Col. He received his commission as Colonel on the march towards Gettysburg. He would be hit while leading his men at Gettysburg, receiving 3 wounds, to the head and leg. He died July 2, 1863. The 82d lost almost 50% of its men at Gettysburg. Signature verification substantiates that this was Colonel Huston's well-worn book.

Comes housed in 12 x 16 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
