Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Belt Buckle with Keeper - Inventory Number: VET 368

This brass belt buckle was worn by members of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), a fraternal organization of Union Civil War veterans established in 1866. The rectangular buckle features a relief depiction of the G.A.R. star emblem at center, flanked by raised letters “G” and “R” on either side, all set against a stippled background.

The back of the plate shows its original tongue attachment and includes the separate keeper fitting—often lost over time—making this a complete example. Signs of wear and minor residue on the reverse are consistent with age and use.

These buckles were proudly worn on reunion and parade dress uniforms well into the late 19th and early 20th centuries and symbolize the ongoing camaraderie and public visibility of Union veterans after the war.

An excellent display piece for any collection focused on post-war veteran organizations or Civil War remembrance culture.

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
