Handwritten Letter by President Rutherford B. Hayes - Inventory Number: AUT 133
Featuring Quotation from Abraham Lincoln – c. Late 19th Century
This historically significant framed display features an original handwritten letter by Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States (1877–1881). The letter includes a reference to the “Art of War” and poignantly quotes President Abraham Lincoln: “To care for him who hath borne the battle, and for his widow and his orphan.” This iconic phrase—taken from Lincoln’s second inaugural address—became a guiding principle for veterans’ care in the post–Civil War era.
The display includes the original envelope addressed in Hayes’ hand, the complete letter text, and a period portrait of the president. The content reflects Hayes’ deep respect for the Union veterans and their families, and his enduring connection to the Civil War’s moral legacy.
This item is a rare and meaningful artifact connecting two American presidents and their shared commitment to postwar remembrance and veteran welfare.

DEAR COMRADE:
I would be particularly glad to meet you again. The West Virginia days of 1861, when as raw volunteers we were school boys together in the art of war, are very vividly called to mind by your letter. It would be a gratification also to work with you in behalf of the charity fund of your post. We, at least, will not forget "to care for him who hath borne the battle, and for his widow and his orphans." I regret that prior engagements prevent me from accepting your invitation. Sincerely,
R. B. HAYES.
