Hathaway Patent Writing Kit - Nine wood slats are secured on a rubberized cloth backing, which can be unrolled and the slats locked into a rigid writing surface by a pivoting slat that locks under a brass bracket. The rubberized cloth extends beyond this slightly to wrap around and close a tin cylinder which measures approximately 8" long and 1 5/8" in diameter, which is open along one side and was designed to hold an inkwell, pens, paper, envelopes, etc. The Hathaway patent date of December 24, 1861 is stamped on one of the slats. Contains a bone handled wax seal and a traveling inkwell.
