Identification Badge of Pvt. Patrick L. Cody Company A, 128th New York Volunteer Infantry 19th Army Corps, Union Army, Civil War (1862–1865) - Inventory Number: IDE 294
This Gold Maltese Cross badge belonged to Private Patrick L. Cody, a soldier in Company A, 128th New York Infantry, which served with the XIX Army Corps during the American Civil War. The badge, a symbol of the 19th Corps, was worn on the uniform for identification and esprit de corps.
The 128th New York Infantry was organized in Hudson, New York, and mustered into service on September 4, 1862. The regiment participated in significant campaigns, including the siege of Port Hudson in Louisiana and later engagements in the Shenandoah Valley, such as the Battle of Cedar Creek.
The reverse of the badge is engraved with “P. L. Cody,” providing a personal connection to the soldier who wore it. Such badges were commonly used after General Daniel Butterfield introduced corps badges in 1863 to improve organization and morale within the Union Army.
This artifact serves as a tangible link to the personal experiences of Union soldiers and the broader history of the Civil War.
