    Confederate Identified Confederate Officer’s Haversack - Inventory Number: LEA 200 / Sold

    Belonging to John W. Butler of the 44th GA Infantry

    Constructed with a leather body and tarred leather primary flap with long leather closure tab intact.  This secured at the bottom of the bi, this example is mounted with a coarse cotton sling with adjustable brass buckle.  The body has a period ink identification “J.W. Butler / A.N.V.”  The 

    Captain Butler was from Pike County GA; He enlisted on 3/4/1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant. On 3/4/1862 he was commissioned into "H" Co. GA 44th Infantry. Promoted to 1st Lieut. 3/17/1862. Capt. 7/9/1862. He died on 11/18/1862 at Pike County, GA.
