    Dear Brother,

We received your letter of the 3rd today. If your letter is the only one, was I have heard from John in more than a month. I wish he could write, but it seems he is where they are not allowed to write. I was down to Kate Davies’ Saturday and while there in came one of the 1st Cavalry boys to have his picture taken. Jennie Blansett was there and we were all inquisitive to know how he got here just this time, so Jennie went up to him and asked him where he came from the Army. He said he was of Co. F. I think his name is Chamberlain. He said he was wounded in the battle of New Market, through the shoulder, taken prisoner, escaped, received a furlough & left the Regt. the 29th at Staunton, & stated it was his expectation to return again Friday of that week to go to Martinsburg but then to the Regt. He knew you being with Capt. Alexander. Jim Rhodes of Co. H. that is married, Capt. Schneider & Fred. Bevor also of the same Regt. and C.P. Brumm of Co. F. clear from Topton Station. Frank Snyder wounded in the limb. Charlie Jones also of Mertztown. Billie Herman is reported a prisoner, ain’t it awful, these few names make quite a change & stir in the country and many broken families. Brumm’s oldest son was also wounded in the first of this last battle so both brothers wounded.

Was there any of the boys that we know killed, wounded, or taken prisoners? Where is Billy Clark, who is likely to be Lt. and where is John McLean?

Lizzie Fleming is here. I went to Jersey City today to meet her, as she seems to pay us a visit after so long a time. We are all very well. If nothing prevents, I will go up to the country Friday next week. Please write to me soon and direct to Topton for the week about then & I track or I’ll write to you again when I intend to leave the firm. When have you seen John & Jerry? I wish the soldiers were allowed to write home again so I could hear from John again, but so long as I can hear from him when you write, I’ll try to be contented for the present. Let about three papers you suspected I mailed to you, it is a mistake. I have not sent you any papers very lately, but I think it was either Jennie Blansett or Watson, as Jennie told me she had mailed a letter to you last Monday. Lizzie says she has not forgotten you & she intends to give her either yet one night. She tells me to hurry up & then she will name the four corners of the bed posts and go to bed.

Write soon as you can to me when you see John. Tell him to write as soon as he can. So good night.

    Remember me.

    Truly your sister,

    Ettie H. Bogert
