"Malvern Hill" Brick

"Malvern Hill" Brick - Inventory Number: MIS 292

This "Malvern Hill" brick was fired in a kiln that was constructed at the site of the Malvern House located on the Malvern Hill property in 1888. They were made to commemorate the Battle of Malvern Hill occurring July 1, 1862, the last of the Seven Days' Battles. Embossed on the brick is "MALVERN HILL" over a cannon, with "JUL. 1st" to one side, and "1862" to the other. This particular brick is one of the better examples I have come across and is only one of four that I have been able to offer in the last twenty years. The raised letters, numerals, landscape, cannon and cannon balls show wear, but all are clearly visible. While a small portion of a rear corner is no longer present, its overall condition is very good as it is solid with only minimal chipping primarily on its edges. There are no repairs. It measures approximately 8-3/8 (L) x 4-3/16 (W) x 1-1/2 (D) inches and weighs 3.4 pounds. Not many of these bricks have survived over the years, but this one has. An example of another Malvern Hill brick is pictured in "The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics" by Stephen W. Sylvia & Michael J. O'Donnell, on page 105. An excellent addition to any Civil War relic collection but also a great display piece on a fireplace hearth or mantle in any office, den, or family room.
