Piece of Wooden Staircase from where Ellsworth was Killed with great soldiers’ letter!

A soldier’s account of life in Alexandria, Virginia in September 1861. A union soldier station in Alexandria describes his life and events, including food, enjoyment, shooting and jailing of the drunken soldiers, bawdy houses and presence of many girls; also the usual army rumors. William promises to send his cousin a piece of the stairs on which colonel Ellsworth was mortally wounded at the Marshall house. He will also send a pistol from the next fight if he does not get shot himself.

The letter presents in excellent condition a patriotic equestrian portrait of George Washington on a union pedestal in red, white, and blue. An original of the stairs measuring 1/4” x 3” is present with the letter a wonderful historical relic of the beginning of the Civil War.

Comes housed in 12 x 16 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
